Officially founded in the year of our Lord, 1151, however, according to tradition, after the battle of Clavijo, in the year 844, the Field Marshal Sancho Martínez de Tejada along with thirteen knights requested permission from King Ramiro to constitute an military chivalric order of dedicated to Saint James the Great, however, some historians cast doubt on these claims, and maintain that the first written record appeared in the Monastery of Uclés, residence of the Grand Master of Saint James (Santiago), showing the statutes of Christian brotherhood and reverence of the Apostle.

The truth is that the devotion to the Apostle James flourished and so did the pilgrimage of all of Christendom to the tomb of the Apostle in Compostela, the monks of nearby Monasteries become the protectors of the pilgrims, from robbers and Arabs.

As proof of this is the Privilege granted to the Convent of Sancti Spiritus of Salamanca, dated November 15, 1030, in which King Fernando I of Castile mentions the Knights of the Commendation of Santiago.

The Bull of approval is granted by Pope Alexander III dated July 5, 1175. It should be emphasized that in early times papal approval was not indispensable for the establishment of Orders of Chivalry and Religious Orders, since in fact they were created by ordinary bishops.

The Order of Santiago grew under the Rule of Saint Augustine. The order played an especially important role during the reconquest of Spain from the Moors. From its small beginning, with a Master and a council of Thirteen Knights, all of whom oversaw the administration, responsibilities, and discipline within the order. The Master was chosen from this council.

Since its foundation, it participated in almost all the armed engagements, between the Kingdoms of Castile and León and the Al-Mohad Caliphate, marked by heroic deeds of its knights. Actions such as that of frey Fernando Díaz and frey Santiago Fernández de Lemus in the Battle of Alarcos, or those of frey Pedro de Arias in that of Las Navas de Tolosa.

The order played a decisive role in the conquest of Seville, and at the head of itsMaster, Frey Pelayo Pérez Correa, forced the withdrawal of Moorish forces from southern Extremadura, to the city of Seville. And through his, King Fernando III el Santo, Seville was taken in 1248, and the banner of Santiago was the first to wave over the city walls.
